We have received a couple of inquiries regarding water “let-runs” recently. As of today, we have about 36″ of frost in the ground. The shallowest water main in our system is 4′-5′ deep. Based on that, we will not be issuing any let-runs for some time (most likely not before mid-January.) One of the benefits of the upcoming water system replacement project is that the most troublesome areas for water system freezing will be corrected. Many people that have historically been placed on let-run will no longer need to worry about their water freezing annually.
Also note that as the temperatures start dropping, the property owner is required to ensure the space around the water meter remains protected from freezing. If your basement or crawl space is unheated, extra effort must be taken to avoid damage to the meter per Ordinance 12-100. Finally, if pipes freeze within the building, the City cannot assist with thawing those water lines. Typically, a hair dryer on low heat will work for those situations, but the longer the pipe remains frozen, the more chance there will be a leak as a result.
No credits will be issued for unauthorized let-runs, or for water loss due to an interior plumbing leak.
If you have any questions regarding this matter, please direct them to the Department of Public Works.
