Press Release- Proposed Teal Lake Beach Project

Posted on

October 31, 2018

(For Immediate Release)

RE: Teal Lake Beach Project

The City of Negaunee, City of Ishpeming, and the Rotary Club of Ishpeming are announcing a joint cooperation project. While in its beginning stages, the parties involved are seeking out the possibility of public support and comments on the development of a beach site on the west side of Teal Lake.

“The Rotary Club is always looking for projects that can affect the community in a positive way, we saw a need for additional opportunities on Teal Lake and approached both cities to get their thoughts, so far everyone has been very supportive”, Lance Peterson, President for the Rotary Club of Ishpeming said.

Late this summer, the Rotary Club approached both the Cities of Negaunee and Ishpeming to see if they were willing to help with the proposed beach project. “All of Teal Lake is within the City of Negaunee’s City limits, this means Negaunee will need to be involved,” Nate Heffron, City Manager of Negaunee said. However, the proposed site where the beach could possibly be developed is owned by the City of Ishpeming. Mark Slown, City Manager of Ishpeming, commented: “A collaborative project with a neighbor is a good thing for everyone involved.”

Currently, both cities have agreed to hold several public meetings to gather comments on the proposed project. These meetings are slated to begin soon, each community will announce where and when these meetings will take place. Both Managers agree: “we are really looking for public input to see if there is support for this project and what amenities people would like.

According to both city mangers, no funds have been allocated at this time by either city or the Rotary Club. Both communities and the Rotary are working towards gathering information only. Once all the information has been gathered the parties involved will share their results and determine what the next step will be.

Questions concerning this release may be directed to the attention of the City Manger, Nate Heffron at (906) 475-7700 ext. 11, and City Manager Mark Slown at (906) 485-1091 ext. 204, or Lance Peterson at (906) 250-7988.
