POLICE DEPARTMENT FRONT OFFICE CLERK/DISPATCHER

About the Position
The City of Ishpeming is seeking a detail‑oriented, dependable, and community‑focused individual to join the Ishpeming Police Department as a Police Clerk. This position plays a vital administrative role in supporting law enforcement operations and ensuring efficient daily workflow within the department.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide front‑desk support, greet visitors, and respond to public inquiries in person, by phone, and via email.
  • Prepare, process, and maintain police reports, records, and confidential documents in accordance with state and federal guidelines.
  • Assist officers and command staff with administrative tasks, scheduling, and data entry.
  • Process requests for records, including FOIA requests, background checks, and incident reports.
  • Handle incoming and outgoing mail, citations, and departmental correspondence.
  • Maintain accuracy and confidentiality in all work performed.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent; additional administrative or criminal justice coursework preferred.
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office and database systems.
  • Excellent communication, customer service, and organizational abilities.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to multitask in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Ability to pass a background check.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in law enforcement, legal, or municipal office setting.
  • Familiarity with police records management systems.
  • Knowledge of FOIA procedures and public records laws.
  • Working knowledge of LEIN.

Work Environment & Schedule

  • Hours will be either Monday-Thursday 7am-5pm or Monday-Friday 7am -3pm
  • Work is performed in an office setting within the police department.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Full benefits package including health insurance, retirement plan, paid time off, and holidays. It starts at $24.88 an hour and will receive a bump to $25.63 a hour on July 1st, 2026

PART-TIME BEAUTIFICATION GARDEN CARETAKER

The City of Ishpeming is taking applications for a part-time Beautification Garden Caretaker.  The position pays $15.00 per hour and is up to 25 hours per week, June through September.

Duties include mainly watering hanging flower baskets at various locations within the City using a truck mounted watering system provided by the City.    Must have  a valid driver’s license and be able to safely drive a pickup (with watering system) in City traffic and be able to lift watering wand and complete watering tasks every week.  Schedule can be flexible.  To apply, complete and submit a City of Ishpeming job application form (available at City Hall or on the City’s website) to the City Clerk’s Office, 100 East Division Street, Ishpeming, Michigan 49849.  Applications will be accepted until May 15, 2026.  The City of Ishpeming is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
