Ishpeming Water System Improvement Project
The City of Ishpeming is making major upgrades to our water system to ensure safe, reliable drinking water for decades to come. This multi-year project will replace outdated water mains, remove lead service lines, and modernize our infrastructure for long-term stability.
Project Highlights
- Scope: Replacing ~30,000 feet (5.7 miles) of water mains with larger, more durable lines to improve water pressure and reduce breaks.
- Lead Removal: All lead or galvanized service lines will be replaced with copper in compliance with state safety regulations.
- Funding: Nearly $20 million invested—half from state grants and half from low-interest loans through the Drinking Water State Revolving Fund.
- Timeline: Began October 2024, completion planned for December 2026.
- Summer 2025 Progress: Crews are replacing 9.5 miles of mains on streets including Deer Lake Ave, US-41, Elm St, Michigan St, Bluff St, Jasper St, and more. The “Dig Once” approach coordinates water, sewer, and road work to minimize repeated disruptions.
- Impact: Residents may experience short water outages during switchover periods along with detours and road closures, which will be communicated through the companies.
